3 Mystical Artforms of Kerala by Kunchan Nambiar | The Foodstep

Kerala, known to be the God's own country, has a variety of things to offer. Kerala is known for its backwaters and extraordinary culture, art, poetry, dance, music, etc.

Kunchan Nambiar is a part of the Ancient triumvirate of Malayalam poetry. He was one of the greatest  poets in Kerala and he invented ' thullal ', which means jumping and dancing. People present thullal with jokes and morals; they were very much appreciated by many and opposed by some. There are 3 kinds of thullal :

1. Ottan thullal- It is done extremely fast and is also known as the 'kathakali of a common man'. It involves comedies and is played using 'tharangini'. It was introduced as a replacement of 'chakyarkuthu'. It is performed outside the temple.

2. Parayan thullal- It is done extremely slow and it is played using 'mallika'. It is played in the morning and it is the most difficult thullal to master.

3.  Sheetangan thullal- It is faster than Parayan thullal but slower than Ottan thullal. It is usually performed at night and only 3 members are required to perform this.
